Mars-Red Kalamkari Saree with Printed Phool Bail All-Over from Telangana
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There is a particular red that belongs to the earth before the rains arrive, and this saree holds it with quiet authority. Woven in the Kalamkari tradition of Telangana, the fabric carries a phool bail pattern printed all over in the hand-block style that artisans of the Srikalahasti and Pedana belts have refined across generations. The motif moves in a continuous flowering trail, unhurried and botanical, the kind of repeat that rewards slow looking. Modal silk gives the drape an unusual softness, catching light without demanding it, and lending the mars-red ground a depth that plain cotton could never quite achieve. This is a saree suited to festive afternoons, intimate family gatherings, and cultural evenings where the conversation turns, sooner or later, to things made with care. Pair it with a raw silk blouse in deep ivory or unbleached gold to let the red breathe fully. Minimal oxidised silver at the ears will honour the craft without competing with it.

Behind this piece
Kalamkari, which translates literally to "pen work," traces its lineage to the temple towns of Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Practised for centuries by the Kalamkari artist communities of this region, the craft once adorned temple scrolls and narrative panels before finding its way onto wearable cloth. This saree carries the phool bail, a continuous flowering vine motif, printed across modal silk in a deep, ferrous red. The modal grounds the ancient vocabulary of the craft in something contemporary, fluid, and exceptionally light against the skin.
How to style
Wear this saree with a raw silk blouse in ivory or deep ochre for an afternoon cultural event or a curated gallery opening. For a wedding reception, pair it with a contrast blouse in bottle green and finish with uncut diamond or Bidriware jewellery from the Deccan tradition. On a cooler evening, drape it with a structured jacket blouse in black linen. Footwear in tan leather kolhapuris or bronze-toned block heels will anchor the earth tones of the Kalamkari palette without competing with the saree's own quiet authority.
Fabric & care
Modal silk is a semi-synthetic fibre blended with natural silk protein, and it responds best to a gentle hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse thoroughly and roll in a soft cotton towel to remove excess water before drying flat in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which fades printed Kalamkari pigments over time. Store folded in a muslin cloth, away from moisture and synthetic contact. Steam-press on a low setting with a pressing cloth to preserve both the drape and the print's integrity.
