about the piece,

Description

There are colours that do not ask for attention; they command it, quietly and completely. This saree is woven in Varanasi, the city whose looms have been consecrating silk for centuries. The ground is a deep mars-red, the shade of sindoor and festival lamps, and across its entire surface the zari runs in its characteristic Banarasi cadence: dense, luminous, unhurried. All-over zari weave of this kind demands exceptional loom time and an intimate understanding of how metallic thread behaves against a silk warp, and the result is a fabric that catches light differently with every movement. The golden zari, worked throughout rather than reserved for border or pallu alone, gives the saree a ceremonial weight that makes it instinctively suited to weddings, betrothals, and the grander occasions of a family calendar. Pair it with a heavily embroidered blouse in ivory or antique gold to let the saree remain the undivided focus. Uncut polki earrings and a single gold bangle would complete the picture without crowding it.

the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk for over a thousand years, its looms concentrated in neighbourhoods like Madanpura and Peeli Kothi, where the craft passes from father to son in close-knit weaving families. This saree belongs to that living lineage. The ground is a deep mars-red, the colour of sindoor and auspice, shot through with zari threaded across every inch of the fabric. That all-over zari weave, known locally as jangla or potli work depending on the motif density, demands weeks of patient loom-time. The gold does not decorate the silk here; it is inseparable from it.

to wear it,

How to style

For the wedding ceremony, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in deep ivory or unbleached gold; keep the blouse work minimal so the zari commands full attention. Finish with polki or Kundan jewellery in uncut stones, and heeled juttis in antique gold leather. For a sangeet or reception, a backless blouse in the same mars-red silk creates a more contemporary silhouette. The saree also translates beautifully to a formal cultural evening: draped Gujarati-style with a contrast border showing, paired with temple-set ruby earrings and block-heeled kolhapuris in tan.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk weakens with water and harsh agitation. Dry-clean this saree after every wearing, and choose a dry-cleaner familiar with zari work, since metallic threads can tarnish or fray under chemical exposure. If storing between seasons, wrap the saree in soft muslin, never plastic, and tuck in a few dried neem leaves to discourage insects. Fold loosely and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. Keep away from direct light, which fades both the red silk ground and the gold zari over time. Handled with care, this saree will outlast a generation.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
