the story,

Behind this piece

Kosa silk, also called tussar, is reeled from the cocoons of the Antheraea mylitta silkworm, which feeds on arjun and sal trees across the forests of Bengal, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. The weaving tradition in Bengal draws on generations of practice among the Tanti and Kosta communities, whose looms produce cloth with a characteristic nubby texture and a dry, papery drape quite unlike mulberry silk. This mandarin-orange ground holds that warmth the fibre absorbs naturally from its forest origin, and the woven stripes on the pallu demonstrate the restraint that defines the finest Bengal handloom work.

to wear it,

How to style

For a festival morning, pair this sari with an unstitched cotton blouse in undyed ivory and flat Kolhapuri chappals in tan. The mandarin tone flatters both warm and neutral skin tones equally. For a cultural evening, consider a structured round-neck blouse in matte copper brocade and silver kada bracelets from Rajasthan. A museum visit or literary gathering calls for a simple tucked drape, a handblock-printed potli bag in rust, and oxidised silver earrings with tribal motifs, all kept deliberately unmatched so the kosa texture remains the quiet centre of the ensemble.

to last,

Fabric & care

Kosa silk is a protein fibre with a tendency to water-spot, so dry cleaning is the safest first choice. If washing at home, use cold water, a tablespoon of gentle shampoo, and absolutely no wringing. Lay the sari flat on a clean cotton sheet to dry in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades the orange ground over time. Store folded inside a muslin cloth, not plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent crease lines from setting permanently into the weave.
