about the piece,

Description

There are colours that do not simply catch the eye but hold it, and macaw green is one of them. This art silk saree is woven in Bangalore, a city whose textile workshops have long translated the grandeur of Kanjivaram sensibility into accessible, luminous fabrics for everyday ceremony. The ground is animated by paisley buttas, each one a small, self-contained world of zari detail, scattered across the weave with the kind of quiet confidence that belongs to a practiced hand. The wide border carries the full weight of the design, its zari threads catching light in the manner of temple gold, grounding the airy green of the field. Art silk lends the drape a softness that moves beautifully, neither too stiff nor too fluid, making it equally at home at a festive lunch or an evening puja gathering. Pair it with a plain cream or ivory blouse to let the saree speak without interruption; a polished antique gold jhumka and a single thin bangle will complete the register without crowding it.

the story,

Behind this piece

The paisley butta is one of India's most travelled motifs, its teardrop silhouette tracing a path from Kashmiri shawl-weaving through the looms of Kanchipuram and into the art silk ateliers of Bangalore. Bangalore emerged as a significant centre for art silk production in the twentieth century, offering the luminous drape and zari-like brilliance of silk at a more accessible weave. The wide zari border here follows a cartouche tradition seen across Deccan court textiles, where a strong architectural edge was considered as essential as the field itself. This macaw green carries that same ceremonial confidence.

to wear it,

How to style

For festive occasions, pair with a sleeveless raw silk blouse in deep gold or ivory to let the zari border hold its authority. A Navratri gathering calls for oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. For a wedding reception, consider a fitted velvet blouse in forest green and temple-motif gold studs. Daytime cultural events suit a cotton voile blouse in cream with wooden bead jewellery, keeping the saree central. The macaw green reads particularly well against warm and deep skin tones, needing little beyond a neat bindi and a confident drape.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk is a cellulose-based fibre, typically viscose rayon, and requires handling with the same respect as natural silk. Hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never wring or twist the fabric. Rinse gently and roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water before flat-drying in shade. Avoid direct sunlight, which can fade the macaw-green ground and weaken the zari thread. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, not plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease-setting.
