about the piece,

Description

There is a quality of early morning light in this saree, the kind that rests on still water before the world begins. Woven in Sambalpur, Odisha, this pure Ashwini silk ikat saree belongs to a tradition where the design is dyed into the yarn itself, thread by thread, before the weaving commences. The resulting fabric holds a luminous, off-white ground that seems to generate its own quiet brightness. Along the border, a row of woven rudraksha motifs moves with the measured cadence of devotional art, each bead-form rendered in the precise, geometric language native to Sambalpuri looms. The contrast pallu arrives as a considered counterpoint, its deeper tones anchoring the restrained body of the saree without overwhelming it. This is silk that rewards slow looking, revealing its complexity only when the light shifts. Pair it with uncut diamond or antique gold jewellery to honour the weave's sacred undertones. For blouse fabric, an unstitched piece in the pallu's contrast colour would complete the composition with quiet intentionality.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sambalpur, in the heartland of Odisha, has woven ikat for centuries along the banks of the Mahanadi. The Meher weaver community practises a resist-dyeing technique called Bandha, tying and dyeing silk threads before they ever meet the loom, so that the pattern emerges only as the weave unfolds. This saree carries that tradition in its Ashwini silk body, luminous and weightless, with a Rudraksha border woven directly into the cloth as a devotional motif. The contrast pallu completes the composition, a deliberate counterpoint that Sambalpuri weavers have long used to mark the saree's ceremonial close.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree to a morning puja or a sun-filled festival gathering, where its lucent white reads as both auspicious and quietly refined. Pair it with a raw-silk blouse in warm ivory or a deep saffron to honour the Odishan palette. A single string of Basra pearls or uncut polki at the throat keeps the focus on the woven border. For footwear, choose kolhapuri sandals in tan leather or simple gold-strap flats. A bun dressed with a jasmine garland completes the look without competing with the saree's own ceremonial gravity.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre and rewards patience. Dry-clean this saree after each wearing, or hand-wash in cold water using a pH-neutral, silk-safe detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Rinse once in cold water and roll gently in a clean cotton towel to remove excess moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows white silk over time. Store folded in soft muslin, not plastic, with a small cedar block to deter insects. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines along the silk.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
