Kashmiri Pure Pashmina Shawl with Dual-Color Box Patterns and Floral Sozni Embroidery by Hand
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
There are textiles that ask to be worn in silence, and this Kashmiri Pashmina is one of them. Woven from the finest grade of pure Pashmina, sourced from the high-altitude Changthang plateau of Ladakh, this shawl carries within its fibres the cold clarity of that landscape. Across its surface, a dual-colour box pattern lays the geometry of classical Kashmiri design, while the Sozni embroidery, worked entirely by hand in the needlework tradition that has defined the Valley's artisanal identity for centuries, traces delicate floral motifs with an almost botanical precision. Sozni is one of the most painstaking of all Kashmir's embroidery forms, demanding months of sustained work and an intimacy with the craft that cannot be rushed or replicated by machine. The result is a shawl that belongs equally to a winter wedding and to a quiet evening when something beautiful feels necessary. Drape it over formal occasion wear, allowing the embroidered border to fall along the shoulder. It reads with equal authority over ivory silk or deep winter wool.

Behind this piece
Pashmina originates from the high-altitude Changthang plateau of Ladakh, where Changthangi goats grow an underlayer of fibre so fine it is measured in microns. The shawl reaches its fullest expression in the Kashmir Valley, where Sozni embroiderers spend months working single-needle chain stitches into the fabric without a frame. The dual-colour box geometry here draws from a classical Kashmiri kani-influenced grid tradition, reinterpreted through the needle rather than the loom. Each floral motif is worked by hand, following a visual vocabulary passed through generations of Kashmiri craftsmen in the old city quarters of Srinagar.
How to style
Drape this shawl over an ivory Lucknawi chikankari kurta set for a winter wedding or a literary evening; the embroidery speaks without competing. For a contemporary pairing, layer it over a cream silk blouse and tailored palazzo trousers with Kolhapuri flats in tan. On cooler evenings abroad, wrap it loosely over a dark cashmere coat and let the floral Sozni border show at the front. Jewellery should remain restrained: a single pair of silver filigree earrings from Odisha, or plain gold studs, will let the shawl hold the attention it deserves.
Fabric & care
Pashmina is a protein fibre of exceptional delicacy and rewards careful handling. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral shampoo or a specialist wool wash, keeping agitation to a minimum. Never wring or twist; press the water out gently and roll the shawl in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture. Lay flat to dry away from direct sunlight and heat. Store folded, not hung, wrapped in muslin inside a sealed box with a cedar block to deter moths. Treated this way, a pure Pashmina shawl will remain soft and luminous for decades.
