about the piece,

Description

Where the reed pen meets the loom, Telangana offers this quietly luminous dupatta as proof that two crafts need not compete, only converse. Kalamkari, the ancient art of hand-drawing and block-printing with natural narrative motifs, here graces an art silk ground in Cress Green and Summer Sand, each shade carrying the unhurried warmth of the Deccan palette. Printed flowers trail across the length of the fabric, their outlines holding the considered looseness that distinguishes genuine Kalamkari sensibility from mere surface decoration. A zari border frames each edge with a restrained shimmer, lending occasion-worthy weight without overwhelming the botanical softness at the centre. Art silk brings an accessible drape and a gentle sheen, making this dupatta as comfortable under afternoon light as it is beneath evening lamps. Pair it with a plain kurta in ivory or ochre so the printed field remains the quiet point of attention. It reads equally well folded over the shoulder of a formal salwar or loosely draped across a linen tunic for something more unhurried.

Gentle & simple
the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari is among India's oldest narrative textile traditions, practised for centuries in the towns of Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The name translates simply as "pen work," and the craft once served temple rituals, its flowing floral and mythological motifs drawn freehand or block-printed onto cloth. This dupatta carries that lineage forward: printed flowers rendered in the Machilipatnam tradition, framed by a zari border that adds ceremonial weight. On art silk, the colours, Cress Green and Summer Sand, achieve a luminous, almost watered quality that plain cotton could never offer.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta over an ivory or ecru anarkali for a wedding reception and let the Cress Green do the work that statement jewellery usually would. For a festive afternoon gathering, pair it with a Summer Sand kurta set in chanderi and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan. On quieter days, knot it loosely over a cotton kurta and straight trousers: the zari border reads as intentional rather than overdressed. Kolhapuri chappals in tan leather ground either look comfortably and keep the regional honesty of the ensemble intact.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk rewards gentleness. Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and never wring or twist the fabric, as that distorts the weave and dulls the zari. Rinse once thoroughly, then press between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the printed pigments and the metallic thread over time. Iron on a low-heat setting, with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the zari border. Store loosely folded in a muslin cloth, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe.
