about the piece,

Description

Jet black holds light differently, and in silk, it holds it like a secret. This sari is woven in Bangalore, a city whose silk-weaving tradition draws on generations of craft knowledge carried forward by Karnataka's skilled artisan communities. The ground fabric is pure silk, dense and luminous, with a weight that drapes into ceremonial folds without effort. Across its surface, zari-woven florals and paisleys are worked in gold, each motif emerging from the dark ground with the precision that distinguishes brocade from mere embellishment. The interplay of matte silk and metallic zari creates a restrained opulence, the kind that reads quietly in candlelight and speaks clearly under a ceremonial lamp. It is a sari conceived for weddings and significant occasions, where the choice of black signals not mourning but confidence, a refusal of the expected. Pair it with a deep gold or ivory blouse to honour the warmth of the zari. A single strand of uncut diamonds or polki jewellery will complete the register without competing with the weave.

the story,

Behind this piece

Bangalore has quietly held the reins of Karnataka's silk-brocade tradition for decades, distinct from the louder fame of Kanchipuram yet no less assured in its craft. This sari draws on the city's legacy of power-loom and handloom ateliers that refined Mughal-era floral and paisley motifs into something altogether more architectural. The jet-black ground is a deliberate act of restraint, allowing the zari-woven florals to assert themselves without competition. Gold zari, traditionally drawn from Surat or woven locally, traces each motif with the patience that only silk-on-silk brocade demands of its maker.

to wear it,

How to style

For a wedding reception, drape this in a classic Nivi style and pair it with a deep-necked raw-silk blouse in antique gold. Let a Mysore-set ruby and polki choker carry the jewellery work, and keep the feet in block-heeled kolhapuris in tan leather. For a festive family gathering, a high-neck full-sleeved blouse in black silk keeps the palette severe and elegant. For a post-wedding brunch where the sari reappears, tuck it into a contemporary cowl-neck blouse and finish with oxidised silver ear cuffs and pointed-toe kitten heels in nude.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk demands cool water and absolute calm. Dry-clean this sari after each wearing to protect the zari threads, which can tarnish if exposed to moisture or body salts. If hand-washing is necessary, use a capful of mild silk-specific cleanser in cold water, never wringing or scrubbing. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which strips the black ground of its depth over time. Store folded in a pure-cotton muslin cloth, never plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks in the silk.

Frequently asked

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
