the story,

Behind this piece

Kutch, the vast salt desert of Gujarat, has nurtured one of India's most tenacious weaving traditions for centuries. The artisans here, many belonging to the Vankar community, work khadi cotton into cloth that breathes with the region's particular light: bleached, open, unhurried. The ivory ground of this saree speaks to that restraint, while the multi-stripe border carries the geometry that is characteristic of Kutchi loom work. The mirror embellishment, known locally as shisha, roots the textile firmly in the broader craft vocabulary of the Rann, where reflection and repetition are design principles as much as ornament.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree to a daytime arts festival or a heritage property wedding lunch, draped in a simple Nivi pleat to let the striped border fall clean. Pair it with a handblock-printed chanderi blouse in saffron or indigo for honest contrast. For jewellery, choose oxidised silver from Rajasthan or tribal silver from Kutch itself, pieces with weight and provenance. Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather complete the look without competing. For a quieter occasion, a plain ecru cotton blouse and minimal pearl studs allow the mirror work to carry the conversation entirely on its own.

to last,

Fabric & care

Khadi cotton softens and improves with every wash, provided you treat it gently. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the saree submerged for no more than five minutes. Do not wring; press out water carefully between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sun, which weakens the hand-spun fibre over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp, working around the mirror embellishments rather than over them. Store folded in a muslin cloth, away from humidity, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
