Behind this piece
Bangalore has long been Karnataka's quiet capital of silk weaving, distinct from the louder legacy of Kanchipuram yet no less accomplished. The golden-yellow ground of this saree belongs to a tradition of pure mulberry silk cultivation and weaving that flourished under Hyder Ali's patronage in the eighteenth century. The contrast border carries a woven peacock, a motif long associated with auspiciousness and courtly beauty across South Indian textiles. Rendered in a complementary weft colour, the bird is not printed but structurally woven into the fabric, making it as permanent as the silk itself.
How to style
For a morning wedding ceremony, pair this saree with an ivory raw-silk blouse and uncut diamond studs. A deep green Kanjeevaram blouse in contrast would make the golden-yellow ground glow at an evening reception. For a formal festival occasion such as Ugadi or Dasara, drape it in the classic Nivi style and anchor the look with antique gold Mysore-style temple jewellery and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. Those in the diaspora might pair it with a strappy silk blouse in champagne for a wedding abroad, keeping accessories minimal so the peacock border remains the focal point.
Fabric & care
Pure mulberry silk is protein-based and sensitive to alkaline detergents and prolonged sunlight. Dry-clean this saree after every second or third wear to preserve the lustre of the woven border. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a small measure of mild, pH-neutral shampoo; rinse without wringing. Dry flat in shade, never on a metal hanger. Before storing, wrap the saree in a soft cotton muslin cloth, avoiding plastic bags, which trap moisture. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks along the silk fibres.
