Behind this piece
Sambhalpur, nestled in the heart of western Odisha, has produced ikat textiles for centuries under the skilled hands of the Bhulia weaver community. Their resist-dyeing technique, known locally as Bandha, involves tying and dyeing threads before a single strand meets the loom, so every motif is woven into the cloth rather than printed upon it. This saree carries that legacy in faded-rose cotton, its animal motifs and the signature fish-patterned pallu and border speaking to a visual vocabulary drawn from Odishan folklore, river life, and the natural world the Bhulia weavers have long honoured.
How to style
For afternoon cultural events, pair this saree with a raw-silk blouse in warm ivory and kolhapuri flats. At a Sunday art fair, drape it in a Nivi style with a tucked-in sleeveless blouse in terracotta and silver oxidised hoops. For a refined dinner, choose a deep plum silk blouse, a long antique-gold necklace, and block-heeled mules. In each case, keep accessories spare: the fish border and ikat animal motifs are the conversation. A kota tissue blouse would also work beautifully, adding lightness without competing with the weave.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash this pure cotton saree separately in cool water with a mild, ph-neutral detergent, as ikat dyes are best preserved away from harsh chemicals. Do not wring; instead, press gently between two towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the rose tones over time. Do not dry-clean. Once fully dry, fold along the original creases and store wrapped in a soft cotton muslin cloth. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture. With attentive care, this handloom cotton will soften beautifully and last for many years.
