about the piece,

Description

There are silences in cloth, and Dhakai Jamdani holds the deepest of them. Woven by the master weavers of Bengal on the traditional pit loom, this pure cotton saree belongs to a tradition that UNESCO has recognised as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The fabric is extraordinarily fine, each supplementary weft motif inserted by hand, needle by needle, into the ground weave so that the pattern appears to float like shadow on water. The dark, smoky ground is threaded through with blazing orange and golden accents, a contrast the Jamdani weavers of the Dhaka region have long understood to be among the most arresting in their repertoire. Light passes through the cotton with a gossamer quality that no machine can replicate, making every wearing a small act of preservation. This is a saree suited equally to a formal evening gathering and to the kind of cultural occasion where one wishes to arrive in something considered and true. Wear it with a silk blouse in deep amber or unbleached ivory, and let the woven motifs speak without further ornament. Minimal jewellery, perhaps a single gold bangle, completes the intention perfectly.

the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is one of the oldest and most demanding of all muslin traditions, woven on the banks of the Buriganga and Shitalakshya rivers in the Dhaka region. The craft, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, requires two weavers working in concert, inserting supplementary weft threads by hand to build each motif directly onto the loom. This saree carries that lineage into a deep, absorbing ground of Dark Shadow cotton, where the woven motifs catch light with the quiet confidence of a tradition that has outlasted empires and fashions alike.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this in the classic Bangladeshi style with a narrow pleated fall to let the woven border lead. Pair it with a raw-silk blouse in burnt amber or unbleached ivory to honour the weave's textile origins. For a literary evening or a festive daytime gathering, finish the look with silver Dhokra earrings and flat Kolhapuri sandals in tan leather. The Blazing Orange and Golden Fleece tones in the weave reward a bindi in deep vermillion and a single stack of oxidised silver bangles, nothing more.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the saree submerged for no longer than five minutes. Never wring or twist the fabric; the fine cotton yarns and supplementary weft threads are susceptible to distortion under pressure. Roll the wet saree in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess moisture, then dry flat in shade. Store folded in a soft muslin cloth, away from direct light. Re-fold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creasing along the same threads.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
