about the piece,

Description

Cream holds silence the way Kashmir holds winter, with a patience that borders on devotion. This shawl is woven from the finest hand-spun Pashmina wool, sourced from the high-altitude Changthangi goat herds of Ladakh, and brought to life on the traditional handlooms of the Kashmir Valley. Across its ivory field, maple leaves are rendered in the papier mache tradition of embroidery, a style native to Srinagar where artisans have long borrowed their motifs from the lacquered surfaces of the city's celebrated craftwork. The needlework is unhurried and precise, each leaf carrying the particular asymmetry that only a hand-guided needle can produce. At 100 per cent pure Pashmina, the fabric is featherlight against the skin and deepens in warmth with every wearing. This is a piece made for a lifetime and beyond. Drape it over formal silk at a winter wedding, where its restrained palette will not compete but will quietly elevate. Folded over the shoulders with a wool kurta, it becomes an everyday study in understated grace.

the story,

Behind this piece

This shawl carries two distinct heritages in a single fold. The ground is handwoven from Changthangi fleece, combed from the underbelly of goats raised at altitude on the Changthang plateau of Ladakh, then spun and woven by Kashmiri craftsmen whose families have worked the loom for generations. The maple leaf motifs are rendered in papier mache-inspired hand embroidery, a technique that borrows its jewel-like flatness from the lacquered crafts of Srinagar's old city. Cream is the rarest choice: it demands the cleanest fleece, and shows every stitch without mercy. This piece earns it.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear it loose over a pale ivory chanderi kurta and straight-cut trousers for a winter gallery opening, letting the embroidered leaves catch the light as the only ornament. For a wedding reception, drape it across one shoulder over a silk tissue saree in champagne or soft gold, and let uncut diamond ear studs complete the restraint. On a cooler evening abroad, wrap it over a camel wool coat with tailored trousers and tan leather ankle boots. In each case, the shawl is the statement: keep everything else considered and quiet.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pashmina is protein fibre and rewards patience over speed. Hand wash in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral shampoo, pressing rather than wringing. Rinse thoroughly, then roll the shawl inside a dry towel to remove excess water. Lay flat on a clean cotton surface away from direct sunlight and allow to dry completely before folding. Store folded, never hung, in a breathable muslin bag with a cedar block to deter moths. Never use a machine wash or dryer. Treated with this care, pure Pashmina softens beautifully over years of use.
