Behind this piece
Banaras has been weaving silk for over two thousand years, its looms nourished by the Ganga and the patronage of Mughal courts. The bootis on this saree belong to a grammar of motifs refined across generations, tiny flowering forms that repeat with the precision of a manuscript border. The zari border draws on the city's gold-weaving tradition, where real metallic thread is woven in, not printed or stitched on. Weaver Ansar Ali works within this lineage, a craft community whose knowledge passes through households, not academies. Every inch of this silk carries that accumulated intelligence.
How to style
For a winter wedding, pair this saree with an ivory raw-silk blouse, short-sleeved and plain, so the zari border speaks without competition. Finish with uncut-diamond jhumkas and kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan. For a formal cultural evening, drape it in the classic Nivi style and wear it with a deep-wine velvet blouse and gold kadas. For a festive family lunch, a simple organza blouse in blush pink keeps the mood soft and seasonal. The chateau-rose tone bridges day and evening with equal ease, needing very little beyond itself.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre and must be treated accordingly. Dry-clean this saree after every second wear; avoid washing it at home unless you are confident with cold water and a pH-neutral detergent, used with minimal agitation. Never wring or tumble-dry. To store, wrap it in a clean cotton muslin cloth, not polythene, which traps moisture and weakens the zari. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creasing at the borders. Keep it away from direct sunlight, which fades silk quietly and irreversibly. Stored well, this saree will last a lifetime.
