Behind this piece
The leaf motif carries a quiet authority in Indian textile history. Printed on a cotton-silk ground, this dupatta draws from the block-printing traditions of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, where artisans have long studied the natural world for their repeat patterns. The cannoli-cream ground, that particular warm ivory edging towards butter, is a colour favoured in Indian weaving for its ability to hold printed ink without competing with it. Cotton-silk as a blended ground has been woven across the Deccan and eastern India for centuries, prized for its drape that is neither too stiff nor too fluid.
How to style
Drape it loosely over a deep-olive or forest-green kurta for a tonal, botanical mood suited to a literary festival or gallery opening. Pair with raw-silk palazzo trousers and tan kolhapuri sandals for afternoon gatherings. For a more formal occasion, layer it across a silk chanderi blouse and straight-cut churidar, anchoring the look with oxidised silver ear cuffs that echo the organic line of the leaf print. The cannoli-cream ground reads effortlessly against both warm and cool skin tones, making it equally at home in a Mumbai winter or a London autumn afternoon.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping agitation gentle to protect both the cotton warp and the silk weft. Do not soak beyond five minutes, as prolonged immersion may cause the printed pigments to lift at the edges. Roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess water; never wring. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow the cream ground over time. Store folded loosely in a breathable muslin bag, not a sealed plastic cover. With this care, the fibre will retain its lustre across many seasons.
