the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari is among the oldest narrative textile traditions in India, practised for centuries across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The word itself means "pen work," and the craft divides broadly into two schools: the Srikalahasti style, drawn freehand with a bamboo pen, and the Machilipatnam tradition, which employs hand-carved wooden blocks. This dupatta belongs to the latter lineage, its brown-stone ground evoking sun-baked earth, while block-printed vignettes of village life, cattle, and daily ritual unfold across the surface. The zari border adds quiet ceremony to a textile already rich with documentary purpose.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta over an ivory or rust-toned cotton kurta for a relaxed yet considered daytime look, grounded with Kolhapuri chappals. For a wedding guest or festival occasion, layer it across a raw-silk anarkali in deep ochre, and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas that echo the earthy palette. A third way: knot it loosely at the neck over a linen shirt-dress for a contemporary diaspora dressing moment. Terracotta or horn bangles complement the brown-stone ground; avoid gold jewellery that competes with the zari border's own restrained gleam.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton-silk blends deserve gentle handling. Hand-wash this dupatta separately in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; never soak for longer than three minutes, as prolonged immersion can cause the zari to tarnish and the printed pigments to shift. Do not wring. Roll gently in a clean cotton towel to absorb excess water, then dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight. Iron on a low setting from the reverse side. Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth; avoid plastic, which traps humidity and weakens the silk component over time.
