the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk into ceremony for over five centuries, its looms concentrated in the lanes of Varanasi where Kashi's weaving families have passed down the grammar of zari from father to son. This saree works in art silk, a fibre that honours the visual language of Banarasi tradition while remaining accessible across seasons. The deep black ground, known historically as shyam rang, carries the red pallu and border in continuous zari, a cartography of crimson and gold that references the classic contrast weaves patronised by Mughal courts and sustained by the weavers of Madanpura and Peeli Kothi.

to wear it,

How to style

For a winter wedding reception, pair this saree with a deep wine-coloured silk blouse, raw-silk heels in ivory, and a single strand of South Indian temple-gold beads. At a festive puja gathering, drape it in the Bengali Aath Poure style to let the zari border fall in full pleats, and finish with oxidised silver jhumkas. For a formal corporate event or cultural evening, choose a sleeveless black chanderi blouse, hair worn in a low bun secured with a gold pin, and block-heeled mules in black. The red pallu reads boldly against minimal accessories.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk carries the lustre of mulberry silk but requires its own discipline. Dry-clean this saree after every one or two wears to preserve the zari's integrity, as hand-washing risks loosening the metallic weft threads. If spot-cleaning is necessary, use a soft cotton cloth dampened in cool water. Never wring or twist the fabric. After airing, fold the saree along its original pressed lines with a layer of muslin between folds. Store flat in a cool, dry cotton bag, away from direct light. Refold along different lines every three months to prevent permanent crease marks.
