the story,

Behind this piece

Patan Patola is among the most demanding textile traditions in the world, woven exclusively in Patan, Gujarat, by the Salvi community whose families have guarded the double-ikat technique for over nine centuries. Every thread, both warp and weft, is resist-dyed with surgical precision before a single pick is woven, so that the finished motif emerges perfectly registered from both faces of the cloth. This baroque-rose iteration carries the rhythmic geometry characteristic of Gujarati Patola: bold, jewel-like medallions contained within disciplined borders, silk threads catching light as though the pattern itself breathes.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this saree in a Gujarati or Nivi drape to honour the weave's origins, paired with a raw-silk blouse in ivory or deep plum. For a wedding reception, consider antique Kundan or polki earrings and a pearl maang-tikka; the silk's lustre does not compete but complements. For a curated daytime cultural event, a minimal uncut-diamond pendant and block-heeled kolhapuris keep the look grounded. Avoid heavy embroidered blouses; the Patola is the protagonist here and requires a quiet accompaniment, not a rival.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk Patola demands dry cleaning as the first and preferred option, given the complexity of the double-ikat dye structure. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water with a pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which degrades natural silk protein and shifts resist-dyed colour over time. Store folded in a clean cotton muslin cloth, never in plastic. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. Cedar blocks near the storage area deter insects without the harshness of mothballs against delicate silk.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
