about the piece,

Description

A field of ripe barbados cherries, each one caught mid-bloom in the patient hands of a Punjabi needlewoman. Phulkari, whose name translates simply as flower work, is among the oldest living embroidery traditions of Punjab, passed down through generations of women who once stitched these pieces as part of bridal trousseau and seasonal celebration. This dupatta is worked on a grounded cotton weave, its surface stitched with thread motifs in the characteristic counted-thread technique that allows each flower and geometric form to emerge from the reverse side outward. The barbados-cherry ground, a red that carries warmth without loudness, deepens the embroidered accents and gives the piece its festive bearing. Cotton renders it light and drape-friendly, suited to both the Punjab plains and urban drawing rooms through every season of the year. Wear it across the shoulder over a cream or ivory kurta set to let the embroidery speak without competition. It also folds gracefully as a head covering for ceremonial occasions where restraint and heritage carry equal weight.

the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, which translates simply as "flower work," is one of Punjab's oldest living textile traditions. Practised across both sides of the historical Punjab region, it was once a woman's art: stitched in the home, gifted at weddings, passed through generations. The technique works from the reverse side of the cloth, counting threads to build geometric florals on the face. This dupatta carries that lineage in barbados-cherry cotton, its warm red ground punctuated by thread-embroidered motifs that echo the bagh and chope traditions of rural Punjabi craft without mimicking them exactly.

to wear it,

How to style

Drape this dupatta loosely over a cream or ivory kurta in chanderi or cotton for a daytime look rooted in understated craft. For a festive occasion, pair it with a tobacco-brown anarkali and oxidised silver jhumkas; the red ground will carry the weight of colour without competing. A third option: fold it lengthwise and wear it over one shoulder with wide-leg palazzo trousers and flat kolhapuris in tan leather. The cotton weight keeps the fabric cooperative across all three silhouettes.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand wash this cotton dupatta in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid soaking for longer than five minutes, as prolonged immersion can loosen embroidery thread tension over time. Do not wring; press gently between two towels to remove moisture. Dry flat in shade to preserve the depth of the barbados-cherry ground. Iron on a medium cotton setting from the reverse side to protect the thread-embroidered motifs. Store folded in a breathable muslin bag, away from direct light, to prevent colour fade across seasons.
