Banana-Crepe Pure Cotton Dhakai Jamdani Saree with Woven Bootis from Bengal
Machine or hand-wash cold, inside out. Air-dry in shade. Iron on medium heat. Wash with similar colours the first time.
Description
Woven in the cadence of a Bengal monsoon, this Dhakai Jamdani saree carries centuries of Muslim weaver tradition in every thread. The fabric is pure cotton of the finest count, grown and spun to yield a drape that breathes and moves with uncommon lightness. Across its surface, supplementary weft bootis are interlaced by hand on the handloom, each motif a small act of patience that no machine can replicate. The banana-crepe ground gives the cloth a gentle, almost pearlescent warmth, neither too pale nor too vivid, a tone that flatters without demanding attention. Jamdani weaving, centred in the Dhaka region and its West Bengal counterpart communities, holds the rare distinction of being recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This saree belongs to that lineage. For the day, pair it with a fine cotton or chanderi blouse in ivory or soft gold; for evening gatherings, a silk blouse in deep teal would allow the buti-work to assert itself quietly against the candlelight.

Behind this piece
Dhakai Jamdani is among the oldest continuous weaving traditions on the subcontinent, its origins rooted in the looms of Bengal, where Muslim weavers known as Tanti and Jugi communities once produced gossamer muslin for Mughal courts. The name Jamdani derives from the Persian, meaning a vase of flowers, and the technique involves supplementary weft weaving, where each buti is built directly into the fabric, thread by patient thread. This banana-crepe interpretation retains that essential discipline, its fine cotton ground carrying delicate woven bootis that catch light with quiet authority. It holds a Geographical Indication status for its irreplaceable heritage.
How to style
For a literary festival or gallery opening, drape this saree in the classic Dhakai style with a sheer cotton or mulmul blouse in ivory or warm ecru. Finish with uncut diamond studs or Bengali gold filigree and flat Kolhapuri sandals. For a summer wedding as a guest, pair with a silk tissue blouse in pale gold and oxidised silver bangles stacked at the wrist. On an unhurried Sunday, wear it with a plain cotton blouse, hair loosely pinned, and wooden kolhapuris. The banana-crepe ground breathes effortlessly across all three registers.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this pure cotton Jamdani in cold water with a gentle, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the soak brief to preserve the integrity of the supplementary weft bootis. Do not wring; instead, press the water out gently and dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow fine cotton over time. Iron on a medium setting while the fabric is still slightly damp, working carefully around the woven motifs. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, and refold along different lines each season to prevent permanent crease lines forming.
