about the piece,

Description

Where the loom holds memory, the Jamdani speaks in light. This saree is woven in the centuries-old supplementary-weft tradition of Bangladesh, a craft so refined that UNESCO recognised it as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Each motif is worked by hand directly onto the loom, thread by thread, without any pre-set pattern card, making every piece a singular act of patience and precision. The fabric is pure cotton, cool and weightless against the skin, carrying that characteristic semi-sheer luminosity that Jamdani weavers have cultivated across generations in the Dhaka region. The two colourways, a deep celestial eclipse and a muted, organic katydid green, speak to both the formal and the quietly poetic occasions of a woman's wardrobe. Whether draped for a festival, a literary evening, or a family celebration, this saree arrives with a quiet gravity that needs no embellishment. Pair it with a plain silk or cotton blouse in ivory or deep plum to let the woven geometry take its rightful centre. Unstitched gold jewellery from Bengal or Odisha would complete the register with understated elegance.

the story,

Behind this piece

Jamdani is among the oldest surviving textile traditions on the subcontinent, its roots traced to the looms of Dhaka and the surrounding villages of what is now Bangladesh. Woven on a pit loom by hand, each motif is built into the fabric using a supplementary-weft technique, meaning no motif is embroidered after the fact. The Bengali word "jamdani" itself speaks to floral abundance. Recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage, this cotton saree carries centuries of Muslim weaver community knowledge, passed through generations in places like Rupganj and Sonargaon, where the craft remains quietly, stubbornly alive.

to wear it,

How to style

The deep Eclipse colourway lends itself beautifully to winter evenings: pair it with a full-sleeved silk blouse in ivory or old gold, low block-heeled juttis, and oxidised silver earrings with floral motifs that echo the jamdani's woven florals. For afternoon gatherings, the Katydid offers something cooler and quieter. Drape it in the Nivi style with a fitted sleeveless blouse in antique brass. For a contemporary reading, try a structured crop blouse with a half-Bengali drape, add kolhapuri sandals and a single gold bangle. Both colourways reward understated styling.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton jamdani rewards careful handling. Hand-wash in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing the fabric. Rinse gently and dry flat in shade to prevent the weft motifs from distorting under tension. Avoid direct sunlight, which weakens cotton fibre over time. Once dry, store the saree folded in unbleached muslin or soft cotton, not plastic. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks. With this modest routine, the weave will hold its character and hand-feel for many years of wear.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
