Affogato Pashmina Shawl from Kashmir with Heavy Sozni Embroidered Paisley and Flowers
Dry clean recommended. Store with natural cedar or neem leaves. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture.
Description
Steeped in the colour of a slow-poured espresso, this shawl carries Kashmir's most patient art form on its shoulders. The ground is pure Pashmina, combed from the underbelly of Changthangi goats that graze the high-altitude plateaus of Ladakh, and woven into a cloth of extraordinary fineness in the looms of the Valley. Across its warm affogato field, master needle-workers from the Sozni embroidery tradition have spent hundreds of hours tracing a dense, interlocking world of paisley and blossoms in fine silk thread. Sozni, among the most rigorous of Kashmir's needle crafts, demands that each motif be worked from a single thread passed through the fabric with surgical precision, leaving the reverse almost as clean as the face. The result is not decoration but conversation, a textile that repays slow looking. This is a piece suited to ceremonies, to important gatherings, and to the kind of occasion that calls for something irreplaceable. Drape it over formal silk or tissue weaves at a wedding, and let the embroidery carry all the ornamentation the moment requires. It serves equally well over tailored winter separates for evenings that deserve a quieter luxury.

Behind this piece
Sozni is the needle-and-thread language of Kashmir, a craft passed down through generations of Muslim embroiderers in the valley who spend months coaxing fine silk thread through pure Pashmina wool with a single-eyed needle. The paisley, known locally as the keri, has adorned Kashmiri shawls since the Mughal courts made them synonymous with refinement. Affogato, a warm brown deepened by cream, evokes that same unhurried richness. The dense floral field on this shawl reflects the elaborate dorukha tradition, where embroidery is so fine it reads as woven on both faces of the cloth.
How to style
Drape this shawl over ivory or champagne silk kurta sets for a winter wedding and let the Sozni paisley carry all the ornament your look needs. Pair it with oxidised silver jhumkas from Rajasthan to honour the meeting of two great craft traditions. For a Sunday afternoon gathering, wrap it loosely over a camel cashmere turtleneck with straight-leg trousers and tan kolhapuri sandals. The affogato tone also layers beautifully over an off-white Lucknowi chikankari kurta, offering warmth without competing with the cloth's own quiet embroidery.
Fabric & care
Pashmina wool is a protein fibre of exceptional delicacy and rewards careful handling with decades of wear. Hand-wash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral shampoo, never wringing or rubbing the cloth. Rinse once, press gently between two clean towels to remove moisture, then dry flat away from sunlight. Never hang a wet Pashmina, as the weight will distort its drape. Store folded in a breathable cotton muslin bag with a neem or cedar sachet to deter moths. Re-fold along different lines each season to prevent permanent creases settling into the weave.
