Description
There are mangalsutras that announce themselves, and there are those that simply belong. This piece works in sterling silver, a metal long favoured by silversmiths across Rajasthan and Bengal for its cool lustre and its willingness to hold fine detail without heaviness. The motif here is the leaf, rendered in a gently curved pendant that measures two centimetres wide and just over two centimetres long, its outline softened into an organic arc that sits flush against the collarbone. Zircons are set into the surface with quiet precision, each stone catching light without competing for it. The mala and its adjustable chain extend to forty-six centimetres, threading black beads in the traditional mangalsutra grammar while the silver reinterprets that grammar in a contemporary hand. At eight grams, the whole piece holds almost nothing on the skin. Worn over a fine Chanderi kurta with a silk dupatta at a daytime puja, it reads as devotional and considered. Paired with a wrap dress or a linen co-ord at a lunch or a small family gathering, it crosses registers without effort, never demanding that the occasion explain itself. The chain is fully adjustable and free-sized, designed to sit comfortably from the base of the throat to just above the sternum depending on how the wearer chooses to draw it. Sterling silver benefits from an occasional gentle polish with a soft cloth, and this piece, light enough to forget you are wearing it, is made for daily presence rather than careful occasions.
