Teal-Green Fabric from Banaras with All-Over Woven Flowers in Golden Thread
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
There are colours that belong to rivers, and this teal-green is one of them, deep and quietly luminous, like the Ganga at dusk seen from the ghats of Varanasi. Woven on handlooms in Banaras, this pure georgette silk carries an all-over field of golden flowers rendered in fine zari thread, a technique that Banarasi weavers have refined across generations of practise and patient repetition. Georgette silk, with its characteristic slight crinkle and breathable drape, lends the fabric a softness that heavier silks cannot offer, making it equally suited to formal occasions and to the quieter ceremonies of daily elegance. The interplay between the cool teal ground and the warm gold of the woven motifs is precisely the kind of dialogue that Banaras has always known how to conduct in thread. At a width appropriate for both dress yardage and dupatta panels, this fabric rewards the thoughtful hand of a skilled tailor. Consider having it stitched into an anarkali or a fluid kurta for festive gatherings. Paired with ivory or antique gold accessories, it speaks without needing to raise its voice.

SaleBehind this piece
Banaras has been weaving gold into silk for over a thousand years, and this georgette carries that lineage in every thread. The teal-green ground is woven on handlooms in the narrow lanes of Varanasi, where Ansari weaver families have long mastered the art of zari work on sheer silk bases. Georgette's characteristic crinkled weave demands exceptional tension control at the loom; the all-over floral motifs in golden thread speak to the Mughal garden tradition that shaped Banarasi design vocabulary. Each flower is not printed but structurally woven, making the cloth itself the ornament.
How to style
Cut this fabric into an anarkali kurta with a flared silhouette for a winter wedding; the teal deepens beautifully under warm indoor light. Alternatively, drape it as a saree with a silk organza blouse in ivory to let the gold florals read clearly. For a contemporary approach, consider wide-leg palazzo trousers paired with a cropped blouse in the same fabric. Complement any of these looks with antique polki jewellery or temple-gold earrings. Kolhapuri block-heeled sandals in tan leather ground the outfit without competing with the textile's richness.
Fabric & care
Pure silk georgette rewards patience in care. Hand-wash gently in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, keeping the cloth submerged for no more than three minutes. Never wring; press the water out softly between two clean towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the teal dye and the zari's lustre. Iron on the lowest silk setting, reverse-side only, with a pressing cloth between the iron and the fabric. Store folded in a pure cotton muslin bag, away from moisture and cedar.
