Behind this piece
Kalamkari is one of India's oldest narrative textile traditions, practised across two distinct schools: the hand-painted Srikalahasti style of Andhra Pradesh and the block-printed Machilipatnam tradition. This fabric belongs to the latter, where carved wooden blocks, sometimes centuries old in their motifs, are pressed rhythmically into cloth. The olive-green ground recalls the muted, mineral-rich palette that Machilipatnam craftspeople have long favoured, drawing from vegetable and earth tones before synthetic dyes altered the vocabulary. Pure cotton serves as the ideal canvas, absorbing colour with quiet depth and allowing each printed repeat to breathe with honest, unhurried character.
How to style
Cut this fabric into an angarakha-style kurta and pair it with raw silk palazzo trousers in warm ivory for a considered daytime aesthetic. For a craft-forward occasion such as an art opening or literary gathering, a straight-cut kurta with side slits works beautifully alongside oxidised silver jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri chappals. Alternatively, commission a gathered midi skirt and style it with a simple white handloom cotton blouse, adding a single strand of rudraksha beads. The olive tone reads equally well against warm and cool skin, making it a genuinely versatile choice across seasons.
Fabric & care
Hand wash this pure cotton fabric separately in cold water using a gentle, pH-neutral detergent during the first two washes to allow the block-printed colours to settle. Avoid soaking for extended periods, as sustained immersion can lift pigment from the printed areas. Do not wring; instead, press gently between two clean towels before drying flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can oxidise the olive ground unevenly. Iron on a medium-cotton setting while slightly damp for a crisp finish. Store folded with a muslin layer between folds to prevent colour transfer over time.
