the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, which translates literally as "pen work," traces its lineage to the temple towns of Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh. The blocked Kalamkari tradition of Machilipatnam uses hand-carved wooden blocks dipped in natural or vegetable-derived dyes, pressed with quiet precision onto pure cotton cloth. Floral vine motifs in this tradition often echo the scrolling borders of temple textiles, where creeping tendrils carried devotional symbolism. This golden-yellow ground, warm as turmeric, belongs to that lineage of sacred colour. The cotton itself breathes generously, making the fabric as practical as it is beautiful.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined anarkali kurta and pair it with ivory chanderi palazzo trousers for a summer wedding lunch. The golden-yellow ground welcomes oxidised silver jewellery, particularly Dokra-inspired neckpieces from Bastar. For a more structured occasion, tailor it into a straight-cut kurta worn over slim churidars, finished with kolhapuri block-heeled sandals. Alternatively, drape two metres loosely as a dupatta over an ivory linen suit. The floral vine print reads well against muted neutrals, and the cotton weight suits both day ceremonies and evening mehendi gatherings without feeling overdressed.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wash this pure cotton fabric separately in cold water on its first wash, as vegetable-based Kalamkari dyes may release slight colour. Hand wash thereafter using a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Avoid prolonged soaking, which weakens cotton fibres over time. Do not wring; roll gently in a dry towel to remove excess water. Dry flat or hang in shade, never in direct sunlight, which fades the golden ground gradually. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp for a crisp finish. Store folded in a cotton muslin bag, away from synthetic materials, to preserve the fabric's natural breathability and colour depth.
