Behind this piece
Banaras has woven silk for over two thousand years, and the brocade tradition it carries is among the most technically demanding in the world. This fabric comes from the Kasim family, whose looms in Varanasi have long practised the Jangla and Tanchoi weaving lineages. The royal-blue ground is achieved through yarn-dyeing before the warp is dressed, ensuring the colour holds its depth across every rose motif. Each flower is hand-interlocked using the kadwa technique, where supplementary silk wefts are individually turned back rather than floated, giving the roses their clean, sculptural definition.
How to style
Cut this fabric into a structured anarkali and pair it with antique polki earrings in uncut diamonds for a winter wedding. For a daytime darbar-inspired look, commission a straight kurta with a narrow Aligarh collar and wear it with raw-silk palazzo trousers in ivory. The roses also carry a lehenga-panel beautifully: use the brocade as the skirt, balance it with a plain georgette dupatta in cobalt, and ground the ensemble with kolhapuri heels in tan leather. The blue reads equally well under natural afternoon light and warm evening chandeliers.
Fabric & care
Pure silk brocade should never meet a washing machine. Hand-wash in cold water using a pH-neutral, soap-free cleanser, working only with a gentle press rather than a rub, which can disturb the raised weft roses. Roll the fabric inside a clean cotton towel to remove moisture; never wring. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the blue over time. Store folded within a soft muslin cloth, not plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease marks along the silk.
