the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has been weaving silk brocade for over a thousand years, its looms threading together Persian motifs, Mughal grandeur, and the particular light of the Ganga. This rawhide-brown fabric comes from the Kasim family, hereditary weavers whose work carries the memory of generations. The roses you see lifted across the surface are not printed but constructed, interlaced thread by thread using the jamdani or karhua technique on a handloom. Brown is rare in Banarasi weaving, a departure from bridal reds, and its restraint makes the floral repeat feel genuinely modern.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this into an unlined kurta with a deep V-neck and wear it with ivory palazzo trousers for a literary festival or gallery opening. Alternatively, commission a structured blouse from this fabric to pair with a cream organza saree; the brown grounds the ensemble without competing. For a winter wedding as a guest, consider a full-sleeved jacket-kurta in this silk layered over a champagne anarkali. Complement any of these looks with uncut diamond studs or polki chokers, and finish with tan or antique-gold mojaris.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk handloom brocade must never meet a washing machine. Dry-clean after every two to three wears, or hand-wash very gently in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral soap, without wringing or twisting. Roll the fabric in a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat in shade. Iron on the reverse side at the lowest silk setting. Store folded in muslin, never plastic, away from direct sunlight. Refold along different lines periodically to prevent permanent crease lines forming on the silk foundation.

Each piece is hand-loomed by artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Small irregularities in the weave are the hallmark of handloom — not a defect.
