Behind this piece
Aari embroidery takes its name from the fine hooked needle that Kashmiri craftsmen guide across wool with extraordinary precision. Practised for centuries in the workshops of Srinagar and the villages of the Kashmir Valley, it demands a steadiness that comes only from years of apprenticeship. Here, that needle traces birds in flight across a ground of pure Kashmiri wool, dyed to the depth of wine held against winter light. The multicolour threadwork follows no mechanical pattern; each bird is placed by hand, by eye, by a tradition that predates the Mughal courts that first celebrated it.
How to style
Drape this stole loosely over an ivory Lucknowi chikankari kurta for a winter wedding reception, and let the wine tones speak without competition. For diaspora occasions, it transforms a simple charcoal wool coat into something considered and specific. Pinned at the shoulder with a silver filigree brooch over a plain silk anarkali, it reads as a complete thought. Pair with kolhapuri heels in tan suede for daywear, or slim gold mojaris for evening. Keep the neckline clean; the embroidered birds deserve the full frame.
Fabric & care
Pure Kashmiri wool is resilient but honest about neglect. Dry-clean whenever possible to preserve the Aari threadwork and the dye's original depth. If hand-washing is necessary, use cold water and a mild, pH-neutral wool wash, never agitate or wring. Press gently with a cool iron over a muslin cloth, never directly on the embroidery. To store, fold with acid-free tissue along the embroidered sections and keep flat inside a cotton bag. Place dried neem leaves nearby to discourage moths. Stored with care, this stole will outlast several seasons without losing its character.
