about the piece,

Description

There are purples that simply exist, and then there are purples that carry the memory of a city within them. This katan silk emerges from the handlooms of Banaras, where the weaving tradition stretches back centuries and the shuttle still moves by the intelligence of human hands. Katan, the purest form of silk weaving, is made by twisting together multiple strands of raw silk into a tightly spun yarn, and the resulting fabric carries a weight and luminosity that machine-made textiles cannot replicate. Across this deep violet ground, paisleys travel in golden zari thread, each repeat a testament to the karigar's command over the drawloom. The colour holds its depth in both natural and artificial light, shifting from plum to violet depending on how the silk catches the weave. It is fabric suited to occasions where presence matters: a wedding, a festive gathering, a formal ceremony. Stitch it into a structured anarkali or a draped saree-style blouse, and pair it with ivory or antique gold to let the zari speak without competition.

the story,

Behind this piece

Katan silk is among the most considered expressions of Banarasi craft. Woven on handlooms in the lanes of Varanasi, it is constructed from tightly twisted, degummed silk threads that lend the fabric its characteristic weight and luminous drape. The weavers of Banaras have worked with zari since the Mughal period, and the paisley, or kairi, remains one of the most enduring motifs in this tradition. Here, the kairi floats across a deep purple ground in golden thread, each figure placed with the precision that comes only from a skilled hand working a draw-loom.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined, straight-cut kurta and pair it with ivory silk palazzo trousers for a formal dinner that requires neither explanation nor ornament. Alternatively, commission a structured anarkali for a winter wedding reception and finish with polki kundan earrings and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. For the most refined use, construct a saree blouse with a deep back and wear it beneath a Benarasi tissue saree in ivory or antique gold. The purple reads exceptionally well under warm, incandescent lighting, making evening occasions its natural setting.

to last,

Fabric & care

Katan silk must be dry-cleaned for the first wash to preserve the integrity of the zari thread and the twist of the silk base. If hand-washing is necessary thereafter, use cool water and a very small measure of gentle, pH-neutral shampoo, never a detergent with enzymes. Do not wring or twist the cloth. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which fades both the purple and the golden thread over time. Store folded in unbleached muslin, not plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent crease lines from setting.
