the story,

Behind this piece

Kalamkari, which translates literally to "pen work," has been practised along the Godavari belt of Telangana for centuries, with the Srikalahasti and Pedana traditions each developing a distinct visual grammar. This saree belongs to the hand-painted Srikalahasti lineage, where natural dyes and a tamarind-tipped kalam build imagery stroke by patient stroke. The motifs here are devotional in the deepest sense: Radha and Krishna rendered in the classical idiom, alongside Kathak hand mudras that carry the geometry of dance into woven cloth. Cotton grounds the spirituality of the image in something entirely wearable.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the Beaucoup Blue or Nouvean Navy colourway with an unstitched raw-silk blouse in deep ochre for a Bharatanatyam recital or classical music evening. For a festive family gathering, pair Karanda Red or Savvy Red with oxidised silver temple jewellery and Kolhapuri block-heeled chappals. Those dressing for a museum opening or cultural salon might drape the navy in a Nivi style, anchor it with a single antique brass kada, and carry a hand-block-printed potli bag. All colourways work beautifully against natural stone and warm candlelight.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash this pure cotton saree separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent; Kalamkari natural dyes are sensitive to heat and harsh chemicals. Do not soak for longer than five minutes. Rinse gently without wringing, then roll in a clean towel to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can fade the painted motifs over time. Once dry, iron on a low-cotton setting from the reverse side. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and the colours to remain true.
