Behind this piece
Organza from Banaras occupies a singular place in the grammar of Indian silk. Woven along the ghats of Varanasi, this sheer, crisp fabric is born of a tradition that has clothed courts and ceremonies for centuries. The Banarasi weaving community, many of them hereditary silk workers whose craft passes from father to son, coax raw silk filaments into a textile of remarkable translucence. Plain organza forgoes the zari and brocade for which Banaras is celebrated, letting the silk itself speak: weightless yet structured, luminous in red and green, electric in yellow and blue.
How to style
Cut this organza into an unlined anarkali and let the sheer panels catch the light at a summer wedding. The red and green colourway asks for antique gold temple jewellery and kolhapuri heels. For the yellow and blue, consider a contemporary straight kurti worn over wide-leg silk palazzo trousers, finished with oxidised silver earrings. Either colourway translates beautifully into a layered cape-style kurti for festive evenings, where the fabric's natural stiffness holds a clean silhouette without needing underlining or heavy interfacing.
Fabric & care
Silk organza is strong but unforgiving of carelessness. Dry-clean for the first wash to set the fabric's finish. If hand-washing at home, use cool water with a gentle, pH-neutral liquid; never wring or twist the cloth. Roll it in a clean cotton towel to remove moisture, then hang to dry away from direct sunlight, which can shift the colour over time. Store folded in acid-free tissue inside a muslin bag. Press on the reverse with a cool iron while still slightly damp to restore the characteristic crispness.
