about the piece,

Description

There is a quietness to Chikan that no other embroidery quite possesses, a restraint that makes each flower feel like a whisper rather than a declaration. This fabric carries that tradition with care, worked in the characteristic shadow-work and flat stitches that have defined Lucknow's Chikankari craft for centuries. The all-over floral motif is rendered across a soft art silk ground, its texture lending a gentle luminosity to the pale, considered palette of Blue Glow, Impala, and Neptune Green. Art silk moves with a fluid drape that honours the delicacy of Chikan needlework, neither overwhelming the embroidery nor competing with it. These are the tones of early morning, unhurried and cool, suited to occasions where elegance is worn lightly, from festive afternoons to intimate gatherings that call for something quietly beautiful. Fashioned into a kurta or an anarkali silhouette, this fabric rewards simple tailoring and needs little ornamentation beyond its own embroidered surface. Pair the Neptune Green colourway with ivory cotton trousers and unpolished silver earrings for a finish that is effortless in the best possible sense.

the story,

Behind this piece

Chikankari is Lucknow's oldest conversation with cloth. Rooted in the Mughal courts of the sixteenth century, this embroidery tradition flourished along the banks of the Gomti, where artisans developed a vocabulary of stitches, including shadow work, phanda, and murri, that could render flowers with the softness of breath on fabric. On this art silk ground, those same floral motifs repeat in an all-over arrangement, each petal traced by hand with the unhurried patience the craft demands. The result carries the signature lightness of Awadhi needlework, translated here into five contemporary pastels suited to a modern wardrobe.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into a kurta with a straight hem and pair it with wide-leg palazzo trousers in ivory for a summer gathering or a daytime wedding function. Alternatively, a flared anarkali silhouette in Peach Nectar with a sheer dupatta in Neptune Green offers a quietly festive combination. For a contemporary approach, tailor it into a shirt-style kurta and wear it over slim cigarette pants. Complement any version with silver jhumkas and kolhapuri flats, or choose oxidised silver bangles to honour the craft's northern heritage without competing with the embroidery.

to last,

Fabric & care

Art silk, though luminous, is a delicate fibre that rewards gentle handling. Hand wash separately in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, and avoid wringing or twisting the fabric. Rinse thoroughly, then press between two dry towels to remove excess water. Dry flat in shade to prevent colour migration and to protect the chikankari stitching from distortion. Iron on a low setting, always on the reverse side, with a pressing cloth placed between the iron and the embroidery. Store folded in a muslin cloth, away from direct light, to preserve both the colour and the thread work over time.
