about the piece,

Description

Some garments carry the memory of a morning market in them, and this one does exactly that. Block-printed in the Sanganeri tradition of Rajasthan, this wrap-around mini-skirt bears the quiet confidence of a craft that has flourished in the villages around Sanganer for centuries. The motifs, a field of small flowers interspersed with processional elephants, are rendered in vegetable dyes on pure cotton, giving the navy ground a depth that synthetic colour simply cannot replicate. Sanganeri printing is distinguished by its fine repeat patterns and its preference for white and pastel motifs on coloured grounds, a sensibility rooted in the region's long trade with Mughal courts and later with European textile merchants. The fabric itself breathes with the generosity that only handcrafted cotton offers, making it equally suited to a coastal afternoon or a warm city evening. Pair it with a gathered ivory kurta and kolhapuri chappals for something effortlessly put-together, or let it stand alone with a simple cropped blouse when the weather calls for ease.

the story,

Behind this piece

Sanganeri printing traces its origins to Sanganer, a small town near Jaipur in Rajasthan, where block-printers have worked riverside ghats for centuries, rinsing their cloth in the Saraswati. The tradition is known for fine floral repeats and confident, small-scale motifs drawn in natural pigments. This skirt carries that lineage faithfully: the elephants and blossoms are pressed into pure cotton using vegetable dyes, their colours settled by sun and water rather than chemistry. Navy blue, in the Sanganeri palette, has long signified both formality and ease, a tone equally at home in Jaipur havelis and contemporary wardrobes.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear the skirt with a white cotton or khadi kurta, tucked loosely, for a weekend afternoon at a craft market or heritage museum visit. For evening, pair it with a fine-knit ivory blouse and Kolhapuri flats, adding a single strand of oxidised silver. If you prefer a more tailored note, layer it under a structured linen blazer in ecru or sand, and choose block-heeled juttis in tan. The wrap silhouette flatters most proportions. Avoid heavy embellishment elsewhere; let the Sanganeri print carry the conversation, as it always has.

to last,

Fabric & care

Hand-wash separately in cold water during the first two washes, as vegetable dyes are living colours that may release a small amount of pigment initially. Use a mild, pH-neutral soap rather than detergent. Do not soak for longer than five minutes. Dry flat in shade, never in direct sunlight, which can cause uneven fading on natural dyes. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, on the reverse side. Store folded with a neem sachet to discourage moths. Treated with this attention, pure cotton Sanganeri cloth deepens beautifully and holds its character for many years.
