the story,

Behind this piece

Aari embroidery traces its lineage to the royal ateliers of Kashmir, where artisans wielded a hooked needle, the aari, to coax silk thread into florals and paisleys across woollen ground cloth. The motifs here, red blooms unfurling against cool grey wool, follow a grammar centuries old: the chinar leaf, the boteh, the garden in perpetual bloom. Kashmiri embroiderers train for years before their hands learn this particular rhythm. Each stitch is a loop pulled from beneath, tight and precise. This jacket carries that accumulated patience in every floral cluster along its hem and cuffs.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this jacket over a slim ivory churidar and a plain silk kurta in deep burgundy to let the red embroidery anchor the palette. For a contemporary edit, layer it over straight-cut dark indigo jeans and block-heeled tan kolhapuris. At a winter wedding or festive lunch, pair it with a tissue silk saree in champagne, adding gold jhumkas with ruby drops to echo the red thread work. All three looks ask for minimal other embellishment: the jacket itself is the statement, and competing prints or heavy neckpieces will only crowd it.

to last,

Fabric & care

Wool, particularly the medium-weight variety used in Kashmiri outerwear, rewards gentleness above all else. Dry-clean this jacket whenever possible to protect both the fibre and the aari embroidery, whose silk threads can loosen under agitation. If hand-washing is necessary, use cool water and a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Reshape while damp and dry flat in shade. Store folded, not hung, to prevent shoulder distortion. Tuck a neem sachet or cedar block nearby to deter moths. Properly cared for, this piece will hold its structure and colour for many winters.
