Behind this piece
Sambalpuri ikat is woven in the Sambalpur district of western Odisha, where the Bhulia weaver community has practised the resist-dyeing technique called bandha for generations. Before a single thread meets the loom, yarns are tied and dyed in precise sequence, so that colour blooms into pattern only as weaving progresses. The result is ikat's characteristic soft-edged motif, never quite sharp, always luminous. This multicolour cotton fabric carries that same meditative precision: geometry that took days to calculate, rendered in threads that breathe freely in every season. It is cloth as cartography, mapping a living tradition.
How to style
Drape this fabric in a simple Nivi pleat for a Puja morning, grounding the multicolour play with oxidised silver jhumkas and flat Kolhapuri chappals. For a literary festival or cultural gathering, stitch it into a straight-cut kurta and layer a contrast dupatta in natural kantha cotton. The bold ikat geometry also lends itself beautifully to a tailored blouse worn with a solid linen skirt, accessories kept spare: a single cuff in beaten brass, hair worn low. In each avatar, let the weave speak without competition.
Fabric & care
Hand-wash separately in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, as cotton ikat dyes may bleed on first and second wash. Do not soak for longer than five minutes. Rinse gently without wringing; roll the fabric in a dry towel to remove excess water. Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which fades the resist-dyed colours over time. Iron on a medium cotton setting while slightly damp to restore crispness. Store folded in a muslin cloth or breathable cover, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to remain supple across years of wear.
