about the piece,

Description

Where the loom speaks in the language of rivers, the lotus blooms without water. This pure silk fabric carries the unmistakable grammar of Banarasi weaving, a tradition sustained for centuries along the ghats of Varanasi by communities of master weavers who have inherited their craft across generations. The lotuses are not printed but woven directly into the cloth, each petal shaped by the interplay of warp and weft in the manner that defines Banaras at its most assured. The multicolour palette draws on the festival sensibility of the city itself, luminous and layered, moving between tones the way old brocade catches candlelight. Pure silk lends the fabric its characteristic drape and sheen, qualities that reward careful handling and patient tailoring. This is cloth suited to occasions where intention matters: a wedding trousseau, a celebratory lehenga, a blouse cut to be remembered. Pair it with a tonal silk skirt to let the woven lotuses lead, or use it as a statement blouse fabric against a restrained Chanderi saree for a conversation between two of India's great weaving traditions.

the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven silk for over two thousand years, and the lotus motif it carries today descends from temple textile traditions where the flower signified purity and divine presence. The weavers of Varanasi, predominantly from the Ansari community, work on pit looms to interlace zari and silk wefts into imagery that once adorned royal courts. This multi-colour fabric continues that lineage, its lotuses emerging from the weave with the quiet authority of a craft that has never needed to announce itself. Each colour transition is a calculated choice, not an accident of the loom.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unstitched lehenga skirt and pair it with a plain ivory silk blouse for a Diwali gathering; the lotuses will carry the occasion without further ornament. For a daytime festive look, have it stitched as wide palazzo trousers worn with a fitted kurta in one of its tonal colours. A classic silk saree drape remains its highest calling, styled with gold Kashi temple jewellery and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. Each choice asks for restraint elsewhere, because the fabric itself is the statement.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk is a protein fibre and must be treated accordingly. Dry-clean for the first wash to preserve the woven structure and any zari present in the lotuses. If hand-washing at home, use cold water with a mild pH-neutral detergent and never wring or twist the cloth. Rinse once, roll it gently in a cotton towel to remove moisture, and dry flat away from direct sunlight, which fades silk permanently. Store folded in a clean muslin cloth, not plastic, and refold along different lines every few months to prevent crease damage along set folds.
