Behind this piece
Tanchoi is a weave of quiet extravagance. Originating in China and carried into India through Surat's silk trade in the nineteenth century, it found its truest expression in the looms of Varanasi, where weavers refined it into something wholly their own. The technique layers weft threads to build dense, jewel-like patterns directly into the silk ground, requiring no additional embroidery. The result is a fabric that seems to hold light within itself. Five scarves in this lot means five distinct expressions of a single, centuries-old conversation between silk, loom, and the weaver's considered hand.
How to style
Drape one loosely over a cream Chanderi kurta with churidar and block-printed juttis for an afternoon cultural event. Knot a second at the collar of a silk blouse tucked into wide-leg trousers for a polished office occasion, anchored with oxidised silver studs. For evening, fold a third into a narrow band and wind it through the hair or around a bun, pairing it with a sheer georgette saree and glass bangles. The remaining two work beautifully as gifts, already possessing the quiet formality that wrapping cannot add.
Fabric & care
Pure silk is a protein fibre and rewards patience over convenience. Hand wash each scarf separately in cool water with a pH-neutral or silk-specific detergent, never wringing or twisting. Rinse thoroughly, then press gently between two clean towels to remove moisture. Dry flat, away from direct sunlight, which will fade the woven colours over time. Iron on a low silk setting while slightly damp, using a pressing cloth. Store folded in cotton muslin or acid-free tissue, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe across seasons.
