the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven its dreams in silk for centuries, but this sari speaks of a quieter ambition. Pure chiffon, weightless as morning mist over the Ganga, carries the city's celebrated brocade vocabulary into a register that is entirely its own. The Kashi weavers who work this cloth belong to a tradition where the loom is both livelihood and liturgy. Grey, uncommonly chosen for Banarasi work, allows the zari-touched brocade motifs to surface with a restraint that feels entirely contemporary. This is Varanasi in a contemplative mood, not festive thunder but a long, considered silence.

to wear it,

How to style

For an evening reception, pair this sari with a sleeveless raw silk blouse in ivory or pale champagne and column-heeled sandals in metalite leather. A temple-border necklace in antique silver, or a single strand of grey freshwater pearls, honours the fabric without competing with it. For a daytime literary or cultural event, drape it in a Nivi style with a full-sleeved brocade blouse in the same grey family. A silk potli and juttis in champagne complete the picture. The muted ground also accepts a deep burgundy blouse beautifully, for evening occasions demanding a little more drama.

to last,

Fabric & care

Chiffon, even when woven with Banarasi discipline, is a cloth that rewards patience. Hand wash in cool water using a mild, pH-neutral detergent, never wringing or twisting the fabric. Press the water out gently between two clean dry towels. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which dulls both the grey ground and the zari. Iron on the lowest silk setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store loosely rolled in a soft muslin cloth, not folded sharply, to prevent stress on the brocade weave. Air the sari every few months to keep it fresh.
