Green Fabric from Banaras with All-Over Woven Paisleys
Dry clean only. Store folded in a soft muslin pouch away from direct sunlight to keep the sheen alive.
Description
The paisley, that ancient teardrop of longing, finds its most lyrical expression on the looms of Banaras. Woven on handloom in pure georgette silk, this fabric carries the characteristic lightness that Banarasi weavers have mastered across generations, a cloth that moves with the body and catches light with quiet intelligence. The all-over paisley motif is not printed but woven directly into the textile, each repeat a small act of precision carried out on the draw loom for which Varanasi remains unchallenged. Georgette silk, with its subtly creped surface, lends the ground a soft texture that holds the woven pattern in gentle relief rather than sharp contrast. The deep green grounds the composition in something earthy and considered, a colour that reads as ceremonial without demanding attention. This is fabric suited to festive occasions, family gatherings, and the kind of celebration where craft is worn as quietly felt pride. Cut into a kurta or a half-sari blouse, it will reward a pairing with antique gold jewellery and unembellished borders; worn as a dupatta panel, it needs nothing more than plain silk beneath it.

Behind this piece
Banaras has woven its identity into silk for over five centuries, and georgette remains one of its most demanding expressions. Unlike the stiff brocades for which the city is celebrated, handloom georgette requires a twisted yarn and a particular tension in the throw of the shuttle, producing that signature airy drape and subtle crêpe texture. The all-over paisley motif here belongs to a long lineage of buteh weaving, a teardrop form that travelled from Persian carpets into the looms of the weavers of Varanasi, where it was refined into something unmistakably its own.
How to style
Cut this fabric into an anarkali kurta and pair it with churidar and kolhapuris in tan leather for a Diwali gathering that feels considered rather than costumed. Alternatively, a draped skirt in this green worn with a plain ivory silk blouse and polki earrings in uncut emerald will carry the paisley without competing with it. For a daytime puja or a mehendi, a simple straight-cut suit with a contrast dupatta lets the woven texture breathe. The green reads differently in daylight and in warm indoor light, which makes it unusually versatile.
Fabric & care
Pure handloom georgette silk is delicate and rewards patience. Hand-wash separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, no soaking and no wringing. Rinse gently, then roll the fabric in a clean dry towel to remove excess water before laying it flat in shade. Never tumble-dry. Iron on the reverse side using a low-silk setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in a clean muslin or cotton cloth, away from direct light and moisture. Avoid contact with perfume and chemical sprays, which can permanently alter silk's lustre.
