Behind this piece
The Gandhi Ashram has long stood as more than an institution; it is a living manifesto of self-reliance woven into every thread. This plain pure silk fabric carries that quiet dignity forward. Khadi silk, born from the swadeshi movement, was never merely cloth; it was a political and spiritual act. The ashram tradition favoured simplicity over ornament, allowing the fibre itself to speak. This fabric honours that lineage: no embellishment, no artifice, only the natural lustre of silk spun and woven with considered restraint. Heritage, here, resides in the weave itself.
How to style
In Porcelain Blue, cut this silk into a straight-kurta paired with ivory cotton palazzo trousers for a literary festival or gallery opening. Heather Rose drapes beautifully as an unstitched sari with a raw-silk blouse, finished with oxidised silver earrings and kolhapuri sandals. Sunlight works handsomely as a blouse piece beneath a cream Chanderi dupatta for festive family gatherings. Green Ash lends itself to a structured jacket worn over churidars for formal occasions where elegance must never shout. Let the fabric's natural sheen do every bit of the talking.
Fabric & care
Silk rewards gentleness. Hand-wash this fabric in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral soap, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Rinse once in cool water with a few drops of white vinegar to restore natural sheen. Roll inside a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows fine silk over time. Iron on the reverse side at a low silk setting while still slightly damp. Store folded in a muslin cloth or acid-free tissue, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and endure.
