about the piece,

Description

There are fabrics that carry silence within them, and this is one. Woven in the spirit of the Gandhi Ashram tradition, this pure silk fabric honours a lineage of quiet, purposeful making. The Ashram's philosophy of simplicity finds full expression here: the weave is plain, unhurried, and deeply honest, allowing the natural lustre of silk to speak without ornament or artifice. Each colour, whether the muted calm of Green Ash, the gentle warmth of Heather Rose, the contemplative depth of Porcelain Blue, or the open brightness of Sunlight, has been chosen to complement the fabric's inherent restraint. This is silk that breathes, that drapes with an easy grace, and that ages beautifully against the skin. It lends itself to occasion wear and to the understated elegance of daily life in equal measure. Consider it stitched into a straight-cut kurta or a fluid salwar, where its simplicity becomes the statement. Paired with hand-block-printed cotton or a woven dupatta in a complementary tone, it rewards those who dress with intention.

the story,

Behind this piece

The Gandhi Ashram has long stood as more than an institution; it is a living manifesto of self-reliance woven into every thread. This plain pure silk fabric carries that quiet dignity forward. Khadi silk, born from the swadeshi movement, was never merely cloth; it was a political and spiritual act. The ashram tradition favoured simplicity over ornament, allowing the fibre itself to speak. This fabric honours that lineage: no embellishment, no artifice, only the natural lustre of silk spun and woven with considered restraint. Heritage, here, resides in the weave itself.

to wear it,

How to style

In Porcelain Blue, cut this silk into a straight-kurta paired with ivory cotton palazzo trousers for a literary festival or gallery opening. Heather Rose drapes beautifully as an unstitched sari with a raw-silk blouse, finished with oxidised silver earrings and kolhapuri sandals. Sunlight works handsomely as a blouse piece beneath a cream Chanderi dupatta for festive family gatherings. Green Ash lends itself to a structured jacket worn over churidars for formal occasions where elegance must never shout. Let the fabric's natural sheen do every bit of the talking.

to last,

Fabric & care

Silk rewards gentleness. Hand-wash this fabric in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral soap, never wringing or twisting the cloth. Rinse once in cool water with a few drops of white vinegar to restore natural sheen. Roll inside a clean cotton towel to absorb moisture, then dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which yellows fine silk over time. Iron on the reverse side at a low silk setting while still slightly damp. Store folded in a muslin cloth or acid-free tissue, never in plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and endure.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
