about the piece,

Description

There are fabrics that carry silence within them, and khadi silk is one such cloth. Woven under the auspices of the Gandhi Ashram, this fabric holds within its plain weave a lineage that stretches back to the very grammar of Indian self-reliance. The hand-spun silk lends the cloth a gentle irregularity, a breath in the surface that no mill can replicate, while the sheen remains soft and considered rather than loud. Available in Blue Jewel, Fern Green, and Print Blue, each colour has been chosen to honour the understated palette that khadi has always favoured: present, but never insistent. The fabric is equally suited to a formal kurta for a cultural gathering, a lightweight dupatta, or an unlined jacket worn through the cooler months of the year. For those who sew their own silhouettes, this cloth rewards a simple cut and clean seams, allowing the textile itself to speak without interruption. Pair it with hand-block-printed cotton separates to keep the spirit of handcraft consistent across the whole ensemble.

the story,

Behind this piece

Khadi silk carries within it the memory of a movement. Rooted in the philosophy of the Gandhi Ashram, this plain-woven fabric belongs to a tradition where the act of spinning was itself a form of resistance and dignity. The silk filament, drawn by hand and woven on pit looms, produces a cloth with an irregular, breathing texture that no mill can replicate. Each length holds the quiet authority of honest labour. The four colourways, from the depth of Blue Jewel to the softness of Candle Pink, allow the fabric's intrinsic luminosity to speak without interruption.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an unlined kurta for a literary festival or gallery opening; the slight slub of the weave gives even a simple silhouette visual intelligence. For a destination wedding, pair Fern Green in a wide-leg palazzo with raw silk mojris in ivory. Blue Jewel lends itself beautifully to a full-circle skirt worn with oxidised silver hoops and a fitted blouse in contrasting Print Blue. Candle Pink, draped as a dupatta over ivory chanderi, flatters afternoon occasions where understated warmth is more eloquent than ornament.

to last,

Fabric & care

Handwash in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral cleanser, never twisting or wringing the fabric. Rinse gently and press excess water out by rolling the cloth in a clean cotton towel. Dry in shade, away from direct sunlight, which will fade the natural lustre of silk over time. Iron on a low silk setting while the fabric is still slightly damp, or use a pressing cloth for added protection. Store folded in unbleached muslin, not plastic, to allow the fibre to breathe and retain its inherent softness across years of careful use.
