about the piece,

Description

The forest holds its breath in this particular shade of green, and Banaras answers with copper. Woven on handlooms in the ancient weaving quarters of Varanasi, this katan georgette carries the quiet authority of a city that has been making silk speak for centuries. Katan, that purest form of silk where twisted warp and weft are held in perfect tension, gives the fabric its characteristic drape: fluid yet structured, catching light without demanding it. The paisleys rendered in copper-toned zari thread trace their lineage back to the buta traditions of Mughal-era Banarasi weaving, each motif placed with the deliberate hand of the karigar. Georgette's natural weightlessness makes this cloth as suited to the heat of a Delhi evening as to the cool interiors of a formal occasion. The deep bottle-green ground deepens the warmth of copper in a way that plain dyeing could never achieve; only the weave itself can make colour behave this way. Consider this fabric stitched into a column-cut kurta paired with raw-silk trousers, or reserve it for a blouse cut to accompany an heirloom Kanjeevaram.

the story,

Behind this piece

Katan georgette occupies a rare position in the Banarasi canon. Unlike the heavier kinkhab or the more familiar katan satin, this fabric is woven on a base of tightly twisted pure silk yarns, producing a surface that is simultaneously weightless and structured. The copper-coloured paisley motifs, rendered in fine zari or resham thread, follow a design vocabulary rooted in Mughal-era brocade traditions, where the boteh motif carried symbolic resonance across Persian and subcontinent courts alike. The deep forest green ground is entirely characteristic of Varanasi's most restrained, sophisticated palette.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into an anarkali kurta with a narrow churidar for a winter wedding function; the copper paisleys will catch candlelight beautifully. Alternatively, commission a structured blouse for a dark silk saree and let the fabric become the focal point of your drape. For a contemporary silhouette, a cowl-neck tunic worn over wide-leg trousers works equally well. Pair with antique gold temple jewellery or uncut polki earrings. Kolhapuris in tan leather or block-heeled juttis in copper complete each look without competing with the weave.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure katan georgette silk demands gentleness above all else. Dry-clean is the safest option for structured garments. If hand-washing, use cold water with a pH-neutral, silk-specific detergent and never wring or twist the fabric. Roll it gently in a clean cotton towel to remove excess moisture, then dry flat in shade. Iron on the lowest silk setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric. Store folded in a muslin or cotton cloth, away from direct light and moisture. Proper care ensures the copper threadwork retains its lustre across many years of wearing.
