about the piece,

Description

White holds light the way only cotton can, and here it does so beneath a canopy of green Phulkari worked in the Aari tradition of Punjab. Phulkari, which translates literally as flower work, has roots deep in the rural embroidery culture of Punjab, where women once stitched khaddar cloth with floss silk into celebrations of season and ceremony. This fabric honours that lineage through its Aari needle work, a technique that draws thread into looped, chain-like blooms with a precision that distinguishes it from the flat-stitch Phulkari of the loom. Pure cotton forms the ground, breathable and crisp, carrying the green embroidery with the kind of quiet confidence that only an honest fabric allows. The white field gives the eye room to rest between the motifs, a compositional restraint that feels thoroughly contemporary. Suitable for festive afternoons, cultural gatherings, or any occasion that calls for considered dressing, this fabric comes tailormade to your measurements. Style it as a straight kurta over wide-legged trousers in ivory, or request a gathered salwar to let the embroidery speak on its own terms.

the story,

Behind this piece

Phulkari, meaning "flower work," is one of Punjab's oldest living embroidery traditions, historically stitched by women in rural households as part of a daughter's dowry. The craft traces its roots across the undivided Punjab plains, where families would spend years completing a single piece. This fabric brings that inheritance forward: the aari technique, worked with a hooked needle, creates each floral motif with a precision and rhythm that no machine can replicate. Set against crisp white cotton with bursts of forest green, it carries the particular confidence of a craft that has never needed to announce itself.

to wear it,

How to style

Stitch this fabric into a straight-cut kurta and pair it with white palazzo trousers for a refined daytime ensemble. For a festive occasion, have it tailored as an anarkali and finish the look with oxidised silver jhumkas and kolhapuri heels in tan leather. A more contemporary reading would be a boxy cropped kurta worn over straight-leg ivory pants, anchored with block-printed juttis from Rajasthan. The white and green palette responds beautifully to minimal gold or silver at the ears; avoid heavy layering at the neck so the embroidery at the yoke can remain the focal point.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure cotton breathes well but rewards careful handling. Hand wash in cold water using a mild, ph-neutral detergent, and keep the embroidered panels face down to protect the aari work from friction. Do not wring; instead, press the fabric flat between two dry towels and allow it to dry in shade away from direct sunlight, which can dull the thread colours over time. Iron on medium heat from the reverse side while slightly damp. Store folded with a thin muslin layer between folds rather than hung, to prevent the cotton from distorting at the shoulders.

Each piece is hand-picked from artisan clusters we work with directly across India. Some are handloomed on traditional pit looms, others use block-printing, hand-embroidery, or heritage techniques passed down through generations. Small irregularities are part of the character — not a defect.
