Behind this piece
The brocade weave on this bracelet bag draws from a tradition that has ornamented Indian courts for centuries. Practised with particular mastery in Varanasi and parts of Gujarat, brocade involves the supplementary weft technique, where additional threads are woven in to create raised, jewel-like patterns on the ground fabric. Here, that vocabulary of interlocking motifs is rendered in art silk, then punctuated with hand-applied beadwork. The result is a surface that catches light the way old zari once caught lamplight in durbars. Small in scale, immense in intention.
How to style
In Royal Blue, carry this against an ivory chanderi kurta and raw silk palazzo at a festive lunch. The Chinese Red reads magnificently beside a cream or gold Banarasi saree at a wedding reception; finish with jhumkas in antique gold. Fuchsia Rose pairs with a slate-grey anarkali for a sangeet, grounded by block-heeled kolhapuris. Black is the most versatile anchor: it moves from a printed georgette saree to a sharply tailored bandhgala suit at a formal evening, requiring nothing more than a single strand of pearls.
Fabric & care
Art silk is delicate and should never be machine washed. Spot-clean gently using a soft, barely damp cloth; avoid saturating the fabric. Do not wring or twist. If dry-cleaning, inform the professional of the beadwork so they handle the surface with care. Store flat or rolled in a breathable muslin pouch, away from direct sunlight, which fades dyed art silk quickly. Keep the bag away from moisture and sharp objects that might snag the brocade threads or dislodge beads. With considered handling, this piece will hold its beauty across many seasons of wear.
