Behind this piece
The paisley, known across the subcontinent as "ambi" or "kairi," carries centuries of Mughal court memory within its teardrop curve. Woven here into a supple art silk tissue, the motif speaks to a long tradition of figured weaving practised across centres such as Varanasi and Surat, where jacquard looms translate elaborate repeats into shimmering cloth. Tissue fabric, with its characteristic translucence and gentle lustre, was once reserved for ceremonial dress. This beige ground keeps the palette quiet and considered, allowing each large paisley to read as a deliberate, unhurried statement rather than surface decoration.
How to style
Cut this fabric into an unlined kurta for festive lunches where silk feels excessive and cotton insufficient; the tissue weight sits precisely in between. For a formal occasion, consider a straight-cut suit with palazzo trousers in a warm ivory or deep tobacco. A third reading: an evening blouse paired with a silk chanderi saree in dusty rose, with the tissue lending structure to the bodice. Complement any of these silhouettes with oxidised silver jewellery, which lets the beige ground breathe, or with kundan earrings when the occasion calls for warmth and occasion.
Fabric & care
Art silk, woven from viscose or synthetic filaments rather than natural protein fibres, rewards gentle handling. Hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent, using light pressure rather than wringing. Rinse thoroughly and roll in a clean cotton towel to remove excess moisture. Dry flat in shade, away from direct sunlight, which can yellow or fade the beige ground over time. Iron on a low setting with a pressing cloth between iron and fabric to protect the surface sheen. Store folded in a breathable cotton muslin bag, away from moisture and prolonged artificial light.
