about the piece,

Description

A wheel turns at the edge of a tribal forest, and from it, an entire cosmos unfolds. The Warli tradition of Maharashtra's Palghar and Dahanu regions has long translated the rhythms of communal life into bold, geometric strokes, and here that vocabulary finds new expression through hand-guided block printing on a breathable cotton-viscose blend. The chakra, or wheel of life, repeats across a warm beige ground with the unhurried confidence of a motif that predates mass production by centuries. Block printing demands that each impression be set by hand, ensuring that no two lengths of cloth carry quite the same weight of ink or angle of repeat. The cotton-viscose construction lends the fabric a gentle drape that softens its graphic tribal character, making it as suited to structured kurtas as to flowing dupattas. For a considered everyday look, pair this fabric with earthy terracotta or deep ochre as a border contrast. Alternatively, let the beige speak on its own by stitching an unlined cape or a loose gathered skirt that allows the chakra to move freely with the body.

the story,

Behind this piece

Warli art originates in the tribal settlements of the Sahyadri ranges, practised for centuries by the Warli community of northern Maharashtra and the adjoining border districts of Gujarat. Traditionally rendered on mud-plastered walls using rice paste, the motifs tell of harvest, kinship, and the turning of seasons. Here, that vocabulary is translated onto a cotton-viscose ground through block printing, a craft discipline rooted in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The Chakra of Life, a recurring Warli symbol of cyclical existence, anchors the composition, each figure placed with the unhurried precision of a hand-cut teak block.

to wear it,

How to style

Cut this fabric into a relaxed A-line kurta and wear it to a Sunday art fair with flat Kolhapuri chappals and a single strand of oxidised silver beads. For afternoon lunches, tailor it as wide-leg trousers paired with a plain cream linen shirt; add terracotta-glazed earrings for warmth. If you sew, consider a gathered midi skirt worn with a tucked white cotton blouse and tan leather block-heeled sandals for a folk-contemporary evening look. The beige ground welcomes every neutral and earthy tone without effort.

to last,

Fabric & care

Cotton-viscose blends require a measured hand. Machine wash cold on a gentle cycle, or hand wash in cool water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent. Do not wring; press out water gently and dry flat in open shade to prevent the viscose from losing its drape. Iron on a medium setting while slightly damp, working from the reverse to protect the block-printed surface. Store folded along the grain, away from direct light, to keep the beige ground from yellowing and the printed motifs from fading over years of considered wear.
