the story,

Behind this piece

Banaras has woven gold into silk for over five hundred years, and this amber brocade carries that lineage in every thread. The Kasim family, rooted in the weaving quarters of Varanasi, works the pitloom with the patience that only generational knowledge produces. Here, creepers in silver and gold zari climb the warm amber ground in a pattern that draws from Mughal garden manuscripts, where the vine was never merely decorative but a symbol of abundance. Pure silk catches light differently at every hour, and this fabric rewards that attention with a quiet, shifting luminosity.

to wear it,

How to style

Wear this brocade as a blouse beneath an ivory or champagne chiffon sari for a winter wedding, and let the amber surface do the speaking. As a lehenga, it pairs honestly with a deep ruby or forest green dupatta in georgette. For a formal occasion, cut it into a structured anarkali and ground the look with kolhapuri heels in tan leather. Jewellery should be restrained: uncut polki or Victorian-era gold pieces echo the zari without competing. Avoid oxidised silver, which works against the warmth of the ground.

to last,

Fabric & care

Pure silk brocade requires dry cleaning for any structured garment. If hand washing fabric yardage, use cold water with a capful of mild, pH-neutral cleanser and never wring. Press only on the reverse side, using a cool iron with a cotton muslin cloth placed between iron and fabric, to protect the zari threads from flattening. Store folded in soft muslin, never in plastic, which traps humidity and damages silk over time. Refold along different lines every few months to prevent permanent creasing. With proper care, Banarasi silk strengthens in character across decades.
