Description

Silence, shaped into silver. Nepal has long understood that the purest ornament needs nothing added to it. These two plain balas are wrought entirely in pure silver, unadorned by stone or enamel, their power residing entirely in the quality of the metal and the quiet confidence of the form. The bala, a traditional closed bangle worn in pairs, is one of the oldest wrist ornaments in the subcontinent, and Nepal's silversmiths have kept faith with its essential character: a smooth, continuous band with a slightly flattened profile that catches light without demanding it. Each piece measures roughly 0.6 cm in height and 5 cm in width and length, and the two together weigh 31 grams, a presence on the wrist that is felt as much as seen. The finish is polished to a clean, uninterrupted brightness, with no applied texture to interrupt the purity of the surface. This restraint is itself a craft decision, one that lesser silversmiths cannot sustain. Wear them alone on a single wrist with a crisp white cotton kurta for a study in understated elegance; or stack them on both wrists against the folds of a raw silk sari for occasions that call for weight without adornment. Free-sized and designed to slip on, they suit most adult wrists without adjustment. Pure silver develops a gentle patina over time, which many wearers prize; a soft cloth restores the original brightness whenever preferred. A considered, lasting acquisition.
