Description

Worn before a child can name the moon, the bala carries a blessing that silver alone seems to hold. Nepal has long kept a tradition of silversmithing that differs from the Rajasthani or Bengali schools in its directness: less filigree, more engraving, a confidence in the metal's own quiet lustre. These two bangles are worked in pure silver, their outer surfaces carrying engraved motifs pressed into the metal by hand, the lines clean and deliberate rather than ornate. At 2.5 inches (6.35 cm) across and weighing 26 grams for the pair, they are sized for an infant's wrist, free-fitting and gently circular, with a profile that sits just 0.25 inch (0.64 cm) high against the skin. The finish is a polished silver that catches light without demanding it, the kind of surface that ages gracefully and brightens with the simplest cloth rub. Presented at an annaprashan or a namakarana, these balas arrive as a gift that does not shout its price. Laid beside a handwoven jamdani joda or a pale Kanjeevaram pavadai, the silver reads as considered, not decorative. Intended for a newborn to early-infancy wrist, the free-size construction means no clasp and no sharp closure point to concern careful hands. Pure silver is gentle enough for the most sensitive skin, and the engraved surface adds grip so the bangle sits quietly rather than sliding. Two pieces are included.
